Total tourists. Totally humbled. Day 3 NYC

We woke a little later (that may have something to do with the cocktails the night before!) and discussed what we should do with our day. We were interested in doing the Hop On, Hop Off bus so planned to see what deals we could get with that. But first - breakfast!

We decided to walk into Times Square again, as, if we wanted to see someone about getting a bus ticket, that's the best place to be!

We wandered and nothing caught our eye so we went to Applebee's again! As we came out and walked along, a man approached us for Hop On, Hop Off sales. We stopped and talked to him and he sold us tickets that included some attractions too!

We got on the Downtown bus loop and sat on it, listening to the information and snapping tourist photos as we went.

We stayed on until we got to the stop for Ground Zero. It was so, so different to how I remember it. When I went in 2008 there was still a large expanse of space where building work was going on. There was a wall with each name of the deceased on and one building. In that building was a fountain with 11 names and droplets. I, and a groups of us, had a talk from Micky Kross, one of the 'Angels on the Stairwell' where he told us his account of that day. It was an honour and a day I'll never forget.

I was shocked by how much had changed in almost 9 years since I was there previously. We walked around the Memorial Flows Fountains.

There is now a Memorial Museum and World Trade skyscraper building, where you can visit the observatory. We chose not to, as the cloud was so thick and heavy and we were advised we wouldn't see a thing if we tried anyway!

We visited the museum. So humbling. I won't write everything from this, I feel the photos speak for themselves.

Coincidentally, we visited on 30th May 2017; exactly 15 years to the day after the clear-up officially ended.

Once we left the museum, we had a snack from Starbucks then got back on the bus - it had been raining so we were given fetching yellow ponchos!!

The loop went downtown, and we saw and heard lots!

Drop off at Times Square then we walked back to our hotel. We both felt more rested so got ready for dinner. We'd decided to use our Comedy Club tickets (you get these with one of the Hop On, Hop Off bus deals).

We stumbled on a restaurant called Bobby Van's Grill which appeared quite upmarket (our kind of restaurant; the type we enjoy at home). It did not disappoint! Our meal was absolutely delicious; possibly one of the best of the week for me.

After we had dinner (and a lush cocktail for me, red wine for my hubs) we ventured to the LOL Comedy Club. There was a host and quite a few comedians. We had such a fun night, with more cocktails! It was such a funny night, I'm so glad we went.

Getting our bearings... Day 1 NYC

We got into Newark airport late evening (about midnight UK time) by the time we got to our hotel - The William, East 39th Street, it was around 1:30am UK time so we grabbed a Starbucks and then went to bed!

We woke early on our first day (around 5:40am local time - 10:40am UK time) and got ready. We went for a stroll and all the British accents around us confirmed that we weren't the only ones up early!

Times Square wasn't too busy at that time. We hadn't eaten since around 10:30pm UK time on the plane (5:30pm USA time) the day before so we were really hungry!

We found an Applebee's. I had a good old British tea! Hubs had a breakfast with bacon, eggs and pancakes, his first time having sweet pancakes with bacon and he was pleasantly surprised! I went for a veggie omelette which came with mini potato fries. We then wandered around and hubs got approached and harassed by a few men trying to sell him a CD. They would not leave him alone, even swearing at him whilst he kept saying no!

We decided to go for a walk out of Times Square and discovered Central Park wasn't too far. We wandered around Central Park, found a boating lake, the Alice in Wonderland statue and a baseball game! We thoroughly enjoyed Central Park.

Once we had walked until our legs had started to ache, we made our way out of the park and started walking back. We found a 5 floor Victoria Secret, which I had to go in! I love their workout clothes and they did not disappoint!

We stopped off for a Starbucks hot sandwich each and a drink - a necessary refuel!

Successful shopping visit later, and we were on our way again... hubs checked on his phone and suggested we walk down to the biggest camera shop in the world - B&H. He is a keen photographer and had been on their website regularly leading up to our trip!

This was a few blocks still from where we were so we carried on walking. He bought what he needed then we headed to the Port of Authority. We knew we wanted to go to Woodbury Common probably the next day, and wanted to check the bus schedule for it and if possible, to buy a ticket in advance.

We were so tired and achy by this point - over 27,000 steps done and 18km covered! We headed back to our hotel and I had a nap whilst he uploaded his photos from the day onto his laptop.

We got ready and headed for dinner. Times Square was ridiculously busy, so crowded we could barely move! We decided to go to the Hard Rock Cafe but with over an hours waiting time for the table, we changed our minds! Planet Hollywood came to our rescue and we enjoyed a lovely meal there instead! I had chicken fajitas and he had a New York strip steak, both washed down with their Matrix cocktail - amazing!

Both suitably full and content (and still aching!) we wandered back to our hotel and got a Starbucks hot chocolate on the way - what a perfect end to our first day!
